Alkali

An alkali is an electrolyte (aqueous
solution) which contains hydroxide ions
(OH- anions).
Alkalis have a pH value of greater than 7. As such, an alkali
o turns litmus paper from red to to blue
o does not change the yellow methyl orange indicator (methyl orange is yellow when neutral)
o turns pink with the phenolphthalein indicator
o shows the colour of blue / violet when tested with universal indicator
Physical Properties
o tastes bitter
o feels slippery
Chemical properties
o alkalis do not react with metals to produce salt and hydrogen gas
o alkalis react with an acid to produce salt and water
