The Golden
Dragon Water Puppet Theater, located in
Ho
Chi Minh City, Vietnam
is the place to watch
this wizardry in puppetry. According to
Shakespeare, "all the world's a
stage", but in this theatre,
the surface of a pool of water is the
stage! The puppeteers carry out their
jobs behind the screen. They manipulate
the puppets using bamboorods
and string
mechanisms
that are
located under
water.
This form of
puppetry is
said to have
originated in
Northern
Vietnam (in
the villages
of the Red
River Delta)
in the 11th
century CE.
