Perkataan mamalia berasal daripada bahasa Latin mammalis yang bermaksud dada atau buah dada.
Mamalia merupakan haiwan vertebrata yang melahirkan anak. Dengan demikian, haiwan mamalia perlu menyusukan anak. Khasiat yang diperolehi oleh anak mamalia datang dari buah dada ibu - justeru itu, nama haiwan ini mamalia. Satu ciri unggul lain adalah haiwan mamalia berbulu (atau berambut).
