Awe
for Technology
II - "Tele-Medicine" in 2018
This is the second piece in the series "Awe for
Technology".
My mother, who is approaching 80 years of her time on
planet Earth,
lives independently from her children. (An interesting
article about Aging
In Place Has Its Benefits, Risks By
Anthonia Akitunde is LINKED
HERE).
Recently, she developed rashes. She
could not identify the source of her problem - whether it was from
eating something that did not harmonize with her gut or from her
coming in contact with something that did not agree with her skin.
She has a slew of Western medicines
courtesy of her
son-in-law, a doctor who had migrated to
Australia.
(Why do people migrate? That's another musing for another day). My
mother is not a great fan of alternative
medicines 另

nor a firm believer in traditional
Chinese Medicine
中医 zhōng yī). However, she is not
well versed with the battery of pills she had been armed with. So,
she "face-timed" (video called) her daughter using a Western tablet
(not the pill but the Apple computer
电
脑 diàn nǎo).
During the online consultation, she used the camera to show her
doctor / son-in-law the part of her skin that was inflamed (which
itched her to no end). And he advised her to take some
antihistamine (a drug used to prevent allergies and cold). Of
course, she could not identify the medicine
and so, she
laid out the battalion of drugs on the table and by the grace of
technology (tele-medicine) , identified and dispensed the
antihistamine with the help of her daughter and son-in-law.
And by the grace of God (to her, and
chemistry

the itches were kept at bay.
The "Apple" (and the Antihistamine) on that day had
kept the physical physician away.
