Tarik
What is it?
"Teh tarik" is black tea (see Types
of Tea) sweetened
with condensed milk. Teh tarik is considered, by some, the
staple drink of Malaysians.
Where
can one get it?
The
drink is popular at "Mamak" stalls (Indian-Muslim hawker
stalls). In addition, many coffee
shops, eateries and even posh restaurants also serve the Teh
Tarik.
How is it made?
Condensed
milk
is added to hot black tea in a container (usually a metal mug).
The hot concoction is then poured from the container into
another (mug or glass). This is done
repeatedly and the distance (height) between the two containers
is significantly large. As the tea is poured over the height, it
traps air and forms froth. The "pulling" action (in Malay,
teh means tea and tarik means to pull) also enhances the mixing
and blending process of the ingredients.
When do people drink it?
"Teh
Tarik"
has become so popular with Malaysians
that drinking it has become a culture. Teh Tarik is drunk during
mealtimes and in fact, at all times of the day. Having a "Teh
Tarik session" has now come to mean having a meeting - be it
formal or informal.
Why is it so popular?
The
taste and aroma (smell)
of the drink are rather special and - some say - addictive (in a
positive way). Perhaps the uniqueness comes from the thorough
blending of tea and condensed milk when the concoction is
"pulled".

minuman ruji penduduk Malaysia.
Di mana teh tarik diperolehi?
Teh
tarik
lazim dihidangkan di gerai-gerai Mamak (orang keturunan
India yang menganuti agama Islam). Selain daripada itu,
teh tarik juga didapati di banyak kedai kopi,
kedai makanan dan juga restoran-restoran (biasa dan
mewah).
Bagaimana
ia dibuat?
Susu
pekat
dicampurkan kepada teh hitam panas di dalam bekas
(biasanya diperbuat daripada logam). Campuran teh ini
kemudiannya dituangkan ke dalam bekas lain (koleh logam
atau gelas).
Perbuatan ini diulangi dan jarak di antara kedua bekas
adalah agak panjang (tinggi). Apabila teh dituangkan di
antara dua bekas, campuran itu memerangkap udara lalu
berbusa. Perbuatan "menarik" teh dari satu bekas ke satu
lagi meningkatkan proses pencampuran dan pengadunan
bahan-bahan minuman tersebut.
Bila Teh Tarik diminum?
Teh tarik begitu popular dengan rakyat Malaysia
sehingga "jom minum teh"
telah menjadi suatu kebudayaan atau gaya hidup. Teh tarik
diminum bukan sahaja semasa waktu makan tetapi pada
bila-bila masa sahaja. Sesi teh tarik kini telah menjadi
masa mesyuarat secara rasmi dan tak-rasmi.
