Museum

The Museum is a Latin word but of Greek origin "mouseion" which means "seat of the muses". Muses are goddesses or daughters of Zeus. The "original" museums were centres of knowledge. They were, in essence, big libraries with collections of artifacts. The "modern" museum has its root in the wealthy Italians who had a passion of collecting classical and ancient artifacts. The Ashmolean Museum is regarded as the first public museum in Britain and the Charleston, the first in the United States. The Louvre Museum is deemed the first in France, and according to some accounts, the first in the world.
