Located 5.5km north of Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Wat is a breathtakingly beautiful temple complex. Voted by Lonely Planet as the #1 travel sight in the world (2015), this temple complex was built by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century AD. Originally a Hindu Temple, it was later converted to a Buddhist temple in the 13th century. Angkor Wat was built as the King's grand temple - in accordance with the order of the cosmos (orde kosmos).
Also, according to Hindu beliefs, Mount Meru is the centre of the world / universe. It is the place where Hindu gods and goddesses reside. The five towers of the temple complex symbolise the five peaks of Mount Meru. The walls and moat represent the surrounding mountain ranges and oceans.

Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat terletak 5.5km utara dari kota Siem Reap di Kemboja. Dibina oleh Raja Suryavarman II dalam kurun ke-12, Angkor Wat telah dipilih oleh Lonely Planet dalam tahun 2015 sebagai tempat melawat terutama di dunia. Pada awalnya, Angkor Wat merupakan sebuah candi agama Hindu tetapi telah diubahkan kepada candi agama Buddha pada kurun ke-13. Angkor Wat dibina sebagai candi raja menurut orde kosmos, iaitu lambang alam semesta. Raja Suryavarman II membina Angkor Wat menurut kepercayaan Hindu yang meletakkan Gunung Meru sebagai pusat dunia / alam semesta.
Angkor Wat juga merupakan tempat tinggal dewa-dewi Hindu. Kelima-lima menara di tengah Angkor Wat melambangkan lima puncak Gunung Meru. Dinding serta parit perlindungan pula melambangkan banjaran gunung dan laut.
Hari ini, selain daripada sebuah tempat sembahyang, Angkor Wat juga merupakan destinasi pelancongan yang amat popular di kalangan pelancong-pelancong.
