Angkor Wat
吴哥窟 wú gē kū
Located 5.5km north of Siem Reap, Cambodia, Angkor Wat is a breathtakingly beautiful temple complex. Voted by Lonely Planet as the #1 travel sight in the world (2015), this temple complex was built by King Suryavarman II in the 12th century AD. Originally a Hindu Temple, it was later converted to a Buddhist temple in the 13th century. Angkor Wat was built as the King's grand temple - in accordance with the order of the cosmos (orde kosmos).
Also, according to Hindu beliefs, Mount Meru is the centre of the world / universe. It is the place where Hindu gods and goddesses reside. The five towers of the temple complex symbolise the five peaks of Mount Meru. The walls and moat represent the surrounding mountain ranges and oceans.
Today, besides being a place of worship, Angkor Wat is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in the world.
