Naming of pets 宠物
Today, my friends from 云南 Yunnan asked me to help name their pet 兔 rabbits. It appeared they took delight in calling their 食草动物 herbivores. And that led me to reflect on how I named my 海龟 turtles. Thinking about it, I did not give the reptilian creatures much dignity - unlike my friends who have respect for their mammalian pets.
I was not unlike Javert of Les Misérables who called Jean Valjean by his prisoner number, 24601. I just referred to my 海龟 turtles as 1, 2, 3, .. in the order of when they came under my "care"; and elevated one to a higher number when another died or escaped off the balcony.
The 微信 WeChat communication with my friends this evening moved me to give more thought (and dignity) to my 海龟 turtles. I shall now, at least, have letters of the alphabet for them; not merely numbers.
Henceforth, I shall call my 海龟 turtles: Yi, Er, San and Si.
