Pomegranate石榴shí liú
Born
and raised inMalaysia马来西亚
mǎ lái xī yà,
I had my fair share of eatingpomegranates石榴 shí liúfor
free as a boy. The fruit 水果 shuǐ guǒ was easily
available, particularly in small towns 小城 xiǎo chéng
like the one I grew up in. Due to the ease of getting
the fruit水果
shuǐ guǒ and
the ignorance of how nutritious the fruit水果
shuǐ guǒis,pomegranate石榴 shí liúwas
lowly regarded.
Imported fruits 进口水果 jìn kǒu shuǐ guǒ, such apples 苹果
píng guǒ and oranges 橙子 chéng zi, on the other hand,
were greatly praised and valued. The people of the
foreign countries who produced them were superior in
their marketing strategies 市场策略 shì chǎng cè lüè and
in their ability to influence. The people of my
hometown 家乡 jiā xiāng had little regard for our own
local produce 土货 tǔ huò. In addition, a couple
of generations of colonial rule 殖民统治 zhí mín tǒng zhì
had made them subservient in their thinking and in
their beliefs. They cared less for the fruit水
果 shuǐ guǒand,
soon,thepomegranate石榴 shí liúplantsbecame
scarce.
Today, thepomegranate石榴 shí liúis
highly regarded and valued as a nutritious fruit.
Many hail the fruit水果
shuǐ guǒfor its
benefits, including thephytochemicals植物化学物质 zhí wù huà xué wù zhíand
the anti-ageing properties 抗衰老特性 kàng shuāi lǎo tè
xìng they believe the fruit possesses. To many a
dweller of my hometown, thepomegranate石榴 shí liúis
no longer within their reach. It is no longer a
cheap fruit for them to enjoy, and to reap the
benefits.
