Differentiating Alkanes and Alkenes
Alkenes
react with
☛
bromine water...
Observation: reddish brown bromine water turns colourless.
For example, ethene reacts with bromine to
produce dibromoethane (which is colourless) according to this
equation
C2H4 + Br2 →
C2H4Br2
☛
acidified
potassium manganate (VII) KMn04
... Observation: the purple solution becomes colourless.
Alkanes show no colour change when added with both of the above.

Membezakan Alkana dan
Alkena
Alkenes
bertindak balas dengan
☛
air bromin ... Pemerhatian: air bromin
bertukar dari merah jingga ke tanpa berwarna
Sebagai contoh, ethena bertindak
balas dengan bromin untuk menghasilkan dibromoethana
(tanpa berwarna) mengikut persamaan ini
C2H4 + Br2
→ C2H4Br2
☛ acidified
potassium manganate (VII) KMn04 ... Pemerhatian: warna larutan
bertukar dari ungu ke tidak berwarna.
Alkana tidak menunjukkan perubahan warna apabila ditambah dengan
kedua bahan uji di atas.
