A constitution is a
system of basic laws
and
principles on which a country is governed. The Constitution is
usually considered the Supreme Law of a country. In the case of Malaysia, the
Constitution is made up of 181 articles. An article is a discrete
unit or section of writing. Often, articles are numbered - as in
the case of the Malaysian Constitution.
An independent commission (a
group of people having administrative, legislative, or judicial
powers) known as the Reid Commission was responsible for the
drafting of the constitution in 1956 and 1957 (before the country
Malaya achieved independence from Britain). Amendments were later
made to the constitution during the formation of Malaysia.
