Time
时间

Time 时间 is
a physical quantity 物理量 that can be measured. It
is a scalar quantity 数量
as there is no direction 向
in this quantity 数量.
Time 时间 is
denoted by the symbol 符号, t. The capital T is usually
used to denote the duration of
time 时间, known as the period 期间. Note that the capital
T is also used to denote another base quantity,
temperature.
The SI unit for
time 时间单位 is seconds, s.
Among the derived quantities that
have time 时间 in them include:
speed,
velocity,
momentum,
acceleration,
force,
pressure,
work and
kinetic energy.
Time 时间 is
divided into 24 hours, 12 hours, 60 minutes and 60
seconds according to a system which counts in 60s
developed by the Babylonians.
The
advantage of counting in 60s is that the number has
many divisors. For example, an hour of 60 minutes
can be divided into
| half
an hour |
30 minutes |
| a third of an hour |
20 minutes |
| a quarter of an hour |
15
minutes |
| a
fifth of an hour |
12
minutes |
| a
sixth of an hour |
10
minutes |
All the
divisions shown above are round numbers.
If the base
10 (decimal) is used instead, the table would look
like this
| half
an hour |
5 minutes |
| a third of an hour |
3.33
minutes |
| a quarter of an hour |
2.5
minutes |
| a
fifth of an hour |
2 minutes |
| a
sixth of an hour |
1.67
minutes |
