A
guild hall 会馆 huì guǎn is a place where Chinese of the same clan
(community) and / or those who speak the same dialect gather.
Many guild halls are frequented by merchants and traders.
Besides serving as administrative centres, guild halls also
function as rest houses (living quarters), theaters for
ceremonies and centres for social and traditional activities.
Guilds were popular during the Qing Dynasty but had its
foundation in the Ming Dynasty.
The architecture of the guild halls built during the Qing
Dynasty is a sight to behold today.
