Preparation of a Strong Alkali
Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH)
The
following describes the preparation of 250cm3 1.0 mol dm-3
sodium
hydroxide solution NaOH (aq)
from solid sodium
hydroxide.
1.
A mass of x grams of sodium
hydroxide
pellets / powder is weighed using
an electronic or chemical balance.
2. The pellets are dissolved in water contained in a
rinsed beaker.
3. The solution in the beaker is poured into a 250
ml volumetric flask.
4. The beaker is rinsed with distilled water and the
water (that is used for washing) is poured into the
volumetric flask.
5. Distilled water is further added in the
volumetric flask until the meniscus reaches the
calibration mark. Care is taken to prevent parallax
error by reading the mark at 900 to the
neck of the flask.
6. The volumetric flask is capped with a stopper.
7. The flask is shaken until a homogenous solution
is obtained.
