Legend of Melaka
It is said that the founder of Melaka was a Sumatran prince from
Palembang, Indonesia named Parameswara. In 1396, Palembang was
attacked by the Majapahit empire hence forcing Parameswara to flee
his country.
He landed in Temasek (now Sngapore) and became the ruler of Temasek
after killing the local ruler, Temagi. The death of Temagi stirred
up Siam's (now Thailand) anger and Siam attacked Temasek.
Parameswara was forced to flee again and this time he arrived at a
small fishing village inhabited by local Malays. Legend says that he
was resting under a Melaka tree when he saw a mousedeer kicking his
hunting dogs into the river. Impressed by the mousedeer's courage,
he decided to start a kingdom on the spot where he was sitting and
named it after the tree he was resting under - The Melaka tree. And
that's how "Melaka" got
its name.
