Hang Jebat's mausoleum is an old grave belonging to one of Melaka's famous warriors. Hang
Jebat is remembered as the champion of justice who died a tragic death,
in the hands of a friend he supported. Accordng to one popular
version of the Malay Annals (Sejarah Melayu), Hang Jebat rebelled
against the king when he thought that the king had killed his good
friend, Hang Tuah.
However, Hang Tuah had been rescued by theBendahara,
which is equivalent to the Prime Minister this day. When the king
realized that Hang Tuah was still alive, he ordered Hang Tuah to kill
Hang Jebat who ran amok and killed more than 40 people in the Melaka
palace.
Hang
Tuah was torn between his love for his friend and loyalty for his king.
In the end, after a long fight, Hang Tuah finally fulfilled the king's
orders and killed Hang Jebat. The grave itself is chinese in style and
is of the type normally used to mark the burial places of high
ministers or Sultans of the period, so it is possible that Hang Jebat
was a real person buried here. Address: Jalan Kampung Kuli, 75200 Melaka, Malaysia.
