☯ discarding of a foreign culture while
remembering one's own
✎
While 田田Tián Tián (her name is a phrase which bears the
meaning of "as beautiful as the leaves of water lilies")
played by Guan Xiaotong,
removes her clown makeup, she reminisces her closeness
and times she had with her mother. Filial piety is a
hallmark of Chinese culture.
☯ educating the
young about one's culture
✎
Mother
teaches and encourages 田田
Tián Tián to write the character 福 fú
which has her name 田 tián as
part of it (bottom right of 福
fú).
田田Tián Tián is to fill
the space left by Mother.
☯ the joy of
learning
✎ One
shares their utter joy when 田田Tián Tián
completes writing the character 福 fú on a red banner (a Chinese
tradition is to hang red banners to ward off
evil in the form of Nian).
☯
the
confluence of cultures
✎
One sees
a piano in the background and calligraphy
brushes at the foreground. One could read the
message to be as such: Even when one's
culture adopts parts of other cultures, one remembers
which takes precedence.
☯ the changes
one undergoes as one grows up
✎As with many teenagers and young adults,
田田Tián Tián is
exposed to the world around her, and is naturally
influenced by it. Now an adolescent, she hastily and
carelessly completes the annual traditional routine
that she carries out with her mother - preparing the red
banner. Her other activities now take priority. As a
young adult, she is shown - on one occasion - to
misdirect her anger and frustrations at the tradition by
tearing the banner into pieces. However, to the viewer,
the love of the mother overwhelms her rude behaviour.
She then leaves to pursue her dreams, resulting in an
empty nest - a phenomenon common in many "advanced"
societies today.
