矛
盾 máo dùn is a Chinese phrase which means
contradiction. 矛 máo means spear and 盾 dùn
means shield. The story behind 矛盾máo dùn goes like
this:
Once upon a time, there was a seller of spears and shields.
One day, he showed a spear to a crowd of potential customers
and boasted, "This is the sharpest spear in the world. It can
pierce through anything!"
Next, he took out a shield and cried out loud, "This is the
strongest shield in the world! Nothing can penetrate it!"
The crowd laughed at him and said that he'd just contradicted
himself.
