This English word is derived from the Cantonese term "kau tau" which means to have great respect. If used in a positive manner, one kowtows to another person(s) or an entity with admiration, awe and reverence.

Physically, kowtowing is demonstrated by bowing very low with the forehead touching or almost touching the ground.

Used negatively, to kowtow could mean to grovel - to abjectly go so low when asking for a favour, forgiveness or mercy.
