of Heaven
天命 tiān mìng
This is the notion or concept that
the ruler of a country such as China 中
国 zhōng
guó received the blessings of the
gods / heaven to govern. The Chinese term 天命 tiān
mìng also means one's
destiny or fate.
Among the phrases associated with the Mandate of Heaven are:
承运 chéng yùn
- to receive the Mandate of Heaven and to answer to the calling to
become the emperor
受命于天 shòu
mìng yú tiān - to accept the Mandate of Heaven and become
the emperor
违命 wéi mìng
- to go against (disobey or violate) the Mandate of Heaven
This Mandate of Heaven 天命 tiān
mìng also encompasses the idea that
there could only be one ruler at one time.
