Borobudur
The
Borobudur Temple is a Mahayana Buddhist
monument near Central Java. It is located about 40km from Yogyakarta,
Indonesia. It took 75 years to complete the construction of this
temple. This Borobudur temple is made up of nine levels and each level
represents a stage in the life of the Buddha. Carvings related to
significant aspects of the Buddha's life adorn the walls
of this magnificent temple.
There
is
a large stupa in the shape of a perforated bell at the highest level
of the temple. This large stupa is surrounded by 72 other smaller
stupas. In each stupa, resides the image (statue) of a Buddha.
The
Borobudur
temple is a place for Buddhist pilgrimage, besides being a
holy shrine to revere the Buddha. Devote
Buddhists periodically go to the temple to worship and to offer
sacrifices.
However, Borobudur now also plays an important role as a tourist
attraction for Indonesia.
Another
famous tourist attraction in the region of Yogyakarta is the Prambanan
temple grounds.
Candi Borobudur merupakan sebuah monumen Buddha Mahayana yang
terletak di Java Tengah, kira-kira 40km dari Yogyakarta. Masa yang
diambil untuk membina candi ini ialah 75 tahun. Candi ini
mempunyai sembilan tingkat dan setiap tingkat mewakili satu tahap
kehidupan Gautama Buddha. Terdapat juga ukiran tentang kehidupan
Gautama Buddha pada dinding candi ini.
Pada puncak candi ini terdapat sebuah stupa besar yang berbentuk
loceng berlubang. Stupa besar ini dikelilingi oleh 72 stupa kecil.
Dalam setiap stupa pula terletak satu patung Buddha. Monumen ini
menjadi tempat suci Gautama Buddha dan tempat perjalanan pemujaan
terpenting penganut Buddha. Penganut Buddha masih berdoa dan
mempersembahkan korban di Candi Borobudur.
Walau bagaimanapun, sekarang candi ini juga memainkan peranan
sebagai antara destinasi tarikan pelancong di Indonesia.
Satu lagi tempat pelancongan utama di kawasan Yogyakarta ialah
Kuil Prambanan.
