Svalbard Global Seed Vault
This is a seed bank located in the permafrost, on the island of Spitsbergen in Norway. The distance of this bank from the North Pole is about 1,300 km. This vault is fully funded by the Norwegian government that established it. The responsibility of administering the vault rests on the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Agriculture and Food. The other partners in this project are the Global Crop Diversity Trust and the Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen).
The vault stores the seeds of tens of thousands of varieties of important and essential food crops. They include beans, wheat and rice. As at the end of 2015, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has seeds of over 4000 plant species.
The objective of this vault is to "provide insurance against both incremental and catastrophic loss of crop diversity held in traditional seed banks around the world". In other words, "the seed vault offers 'fail-safe' protection for one of the most important natural resources on earth".
Bilik Kebal Biji Benih Svalbard
Bilik kebal ini terletak di ibun abadi di pulau Spitsbergen di negeri Norway. Jarak di antara bank biji benih ini daripada Kutub Utara ialah kira-kira 1,300 km. Bilik kebal ini dibiayai oleh kerajaan Norway yang menubuhkannya. Tanggung jawab mentadbirkan bilik kebal ini terletak pada Kementerian Pertanian dan Makanan Norway. Rakan-rakan kongsi projek ini ialah Global Crop Diversity Trust dan Nordic Genetic Resource Center (NordGen).
Bilik kebal ini menyimpan ribuan biji benih tanaman makanan beraneka varieti yang penting dan perlu. Ini termasuk kacang, gandum dan beras. Sehingga akhir tahun 2015, terdapat biji benih daripada lebih daripada 4,000 spesis.
Objektif bilik kebal ini adalah "untuk memberikan jaminan terhadap kehilangan pelbagai tanaman makanan yang meningkat serta meruncing dari simpanan biji benih di dunia". Dalam ertikata lain, bilik kebal ini memberikan perlindungan "pasti selamat" kepada salah satu sumber semulajadi terpenting di bumi.
